Oh, Brother!
As a take-charge gay lawyer on Brothers & Sisters, Matthew Rhys wins the verdicts, dates the hunks, and ushers us into network TV’s next great era.

Here’s a twist on gay drama: At a burger stand in the heart of West Hollywood, Calif., Matthew Rhys was straight-bashed. Sort of, anyway. “This huge, muscley guy came up to me and went ‘gay power!’ and sort of punched me,” recalls the Welsh-born actor, who plays single-and-looking gay lawyer Kevin Walker on ABC’s hit family drama Brothers & Sisters. “Then the man went ‘You’re gay, right?’ I went, ‘No, I am not.’ He went, ‘You’re not? Oh, I feel betrayed.’ I was like, ‘Sorry.’ ”

It’s not always easy sharing a face with arguably the most full-blooded, romantic, and sexually active gay character in network TV history. But then, Rhys seems pretty unflappable. This, after all, is an actor who suffered through eight fruitless pilot seasons in Los Angeles and was ready to blow off Hollywood for good just before Brothers & Sisters came along. These days it takes more than a run-in at a burger joint to kill the professional buzz he gets playing one of his favorite characters to date.

“I love Kevin because in his professional life you get to play the man in charge, in control, very successful, powerful, assertive,” says the 32-year old Londoner. “And on the flip side, in his personal life he’s a bit of a puppy.”

Unlike some gay characters who seem too agreeable to be real, Kevin Walker can be, well, a bit of a dick sometimes, no? Rhys lets out a laugh in response. “I love his flaws,” says the Royal Academy drama school grad, whose past includes the films Titus, Fakers, and Very Annie Mary as well as the London stage production of The Graduate opposite Kathleen Turner. “Kevin learns from his mistakes. Under the dry sense of humor and the caustic repartee, he just wants to meet that one partner, and he hopes that’ll complete everything. I find that quite touching about him.”

It’s lunchtime on the Burbank set of Brothers & Sisters, and Rhys is enjoying some sea bass and salad at a nearby restaurant. His skin is a bit sun-kissed, thanks to a weekend trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for the wedding of his old friend and former flatmate Ioan Gruffudd (Reed, the stretchy guy, from the Fantastic Four movies). “It was beautiful,” says Rhys, “but the bachelor party in Vegas two weeks ago—that was pretty wild. We dressed Ioan up as Buzz Lightyear and made him walk down the Strip. I still feel emotional from it.”

Rhys’s clothes -- aqua polo shirt, Paper denim jeans and brown half boots from Barneys -- aren’t actually his; they’re Kevin’s, but they look good on him nonetheless. Kevin is nothing if not tasteful. “When it comes to Kevin’s costumes, they didn’t want them to sort of shout gay!” explains Rhys. So, I ask, we won’t be seeing Kevin in anything from the International Male catalog?

“What’s that?” Rhys asks blankly. See, folks, he really is straight.

Nei panni dell’avvocato gay in Brothers&Sisters, Matthew Rhys vince i verdetti, esce con i più fighi, e ci introduce nella rete della prossima grande era della TV.
Ecco un po’ di drama per gay: Ad uno stand per hamburger nel cuore dell’ Ovest di Hollywood in California, Matthew Rhys sta tutto impettito. Più o meno,comunque. “Questo enorme e muscoloso ragazzo è venuto da me e mi ha detto ‘Potere ai gay!’ e mi ha dato un colpetto” ricorda l’attore gallese, che interpreta l’avvocato gay single e in cerca Kevin Walker nel dramma principale della ABC Brothers&Sisters. “Poi l’uomo ha detto ‘Sei gay,giusto?’ e ho detto ‘No,non lo sono.’ Poi lui ha detto ‘Non lo sei?Oh, mi sento tradito!’ e io ‘Mi dispiace’”.

Non è sempre facile condividere un discorso con il più passionale,romantico e sessualmente attivo personaggio gay nella storia della TV. Ma Matthew Rhys è sempre calmo. Lui, dopotutto, è un attore che ha passato otto episodi pilota di telefilm senza vederne il frutto ed era pronto ad abbandonare la vita Hollywoodiana prima che arrivasse Brothers&Sisters. In questi giorni ci vuole più di una cora allo stand di hamburger per uccidere quel ronzio professionale che stimola Matthew a recitare uno dei suoi personaggi preferiti.

“Adoro Kevin perché perché nella sua vita professionale puoi interpretare l’uomo in carica, che ha tutto sotto controllo, di successo, potente, sicuro di sé” dice il trentaduenne. “E dall’altro lato nella sua vita privata è un po’ un cucciolo”.

A differenza di qualche personaggio gay che sembra troppo accomodante per essere vero, Kevin Walker può esere, beh, un po’ uno stronzo qualche volta, no? Rhys risponde con una risata. “Adoro i suoi difetti!” dice il laureato alla Royal Acaemy Drama, il cui passato include i film Titus, Fakers e Very Annie Mary e alcune produzioni londinesi di Il Laureato con Kathleen Turner. “Kevin impara dai suoi errori. Sotto l’asciutto senso dello humor e le risposte sarcastiche, lui vuole soltanto conoscere quell’unico partner, che lui spera lo completi. Questa mi sembra una cosa molto toccante.”
E’ ora di pranzo sul set di Brothers&Sisters, e Rhys sta mangiando un’insalata in un ristorante vicino. La sua pelle è leggermente baciata dal sole, grazie ad un weekend a Cabo San Lucas, Messico, per il matrimonio del suo amico e coinquilino Ioan Gruffud(Mr Fantastic nei film I Fantastici 4). “E’ stato bellissimo” dice Rhys “ma il party di addio al celibato a Las Vegas di due settimane fa è stato selvaggio. Abbiamo fatto vestire Ioan come Buzz Lightyeat e l’abbiamo fatto camminare per tutta la Strip. Sono ancora emozionato dal momento.
Gli abiti di Rhys – una polo color acqua, jeans e stivaletti marroni – non sono i suoi; sono di Kevin ma gli stanno bene lo stesso.
Kevin non è nulla se non uno che ha gusto. “Quando si parla degli abiti di Kevin, non abbiamo mai voluto che girdassero GAY!” spiega Rhys. Quindi gli chiedo, non vedremo Kevin nel catalogo dell’Uomo Internazionale?
“Che cos’è?” chiede Rhys. Vedete, amici, è davvero etero.

A mio avviso e' un attore che potrebbe interpretare ,ruoli molto piu' come dire impegnativi ..
